The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) caretaker administration has put Section 144 into effect, which ban children from using or storing e-cigarettes or vapes close to educational institutions.
The Home and Tribal Affairs Department made the decision in response to an alarming rise in the use of electronic cigarettes, or "e-cigarettes," and vaping devices, especially among children and young people in the province, according to an official notification released on Tuesday.
The law highlights the growing worry regarding the widespread use of vapes and e-cigarettes, blaming it on the extremely addictive ingredient, nicotine, found in these devices.
Vaping and e-cigarette usage come with significant health hazards, particularly for young people, pregnant women, and children. These risks can result in addiction and other major health problems.
The provincial Home and Tribal Affairs Department further stated that a 60-day suspension under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 has been enforced. The order bans the sale of vapes and e-cigarettes to anyone under the age of 21 in the province.
Additionally, it is illegal to purchase, carry, or use vapes or e-cigarettes within 50 meters of any KP educational facility.
It is relevant to note that on January 11, Governor KPK Haji Ghulam Ali fully endorsed the call from civil society to outlaw the sale and use of e-cigarettes and vape devices.
