The father of an Indian tennis player asks "supporters and well-wishers to stay away from engaging in any rumors." On Sunday, the father of Indian tennis player Sania Mirza disclosed that her daughter and Pakistani cricket player Shoaib Malik had separated a few months prior.
"Sania's personal life has always been kept private from the public. But today, it is necessary for her to disclose that she and Shoaib are divorced, and she wishes Shoaib well on his upcoming journey!" Imran Mirza, the tennis player's father, post on X.
He said, "We would like to ask all fans and well-wishers to avoid from indulging in any rumors and to respect her desire for privacy at this sensitive period of her life."
Imran made the announcement one day after Shoaib used an Instagram post to announce his 3rd marriage to Pakistani actress Sana Javed. Fans were taken aback when the recently married pair posted their wedding photos on Instagram, leading to rumors that Shoaib and Sania were still together.
According to sources, the cricketer and the 37-year-old tennis player separated in late 2022 and then got a divorce.
They added that Sania had been ignoring the former all-rounder's relationship with other women for a while, but that Sania had now had enough of her husband and decided to take action.
After separating in 2022, Shoaib and Sania once known as the "power couple"—continued to make headlines for a considerable amount of time. It was rumored that Shoaib and Sana were divorced, and that their silence about the topic was allegedly owing to agreements; neither of them had, up until now, publicly confirmed their relationship status.
The cricket player denied the rumors several times and even wrote messages for Sania on social media in a span of four to five months, despite the fans perceiving a noticeable distance between the two. The couple was married in 2010 and welcomed their son, Izhan Mirza-Malik, in 2018.
