Canada Introduces Strict Student Visa 2024 Rules: Key Changes Revealed
Canada has made it tougher for international students to get visas. Starting January 1, 2024, those applying must show they have $20,635 in Canadian Dollars, up from $10,000. This money is separate from tuition and doesn't cover family expenses.
The $10,000 rule was around for 20 years, but this change reflects the actual living costs in Canada. The government will regularly review and adjust this amount based on data.
The immigration minister, Marc Miller, appreciates the positive impact of international students but acknowledges their challenges. The goal is to make sure students know the real cost of living in Canada and protect them from financial issues.
Apart from money changes, Minister Miller worries about student exploitation and might limit the number of visas. He wants institutions to support students properly, or there could be visa restrictions.
Miller calls for teamwork from governments and schools to help international students. If provinces don't act, the federal government might intervene, possibly shutting down some learning institutions.
This follows a global trend, with Australia also hinting at immigration policy changes for students soon. It shows an international shift in how countries handle student immigration.
